Zemanek, John | University of Houston Libraries

Name: Zemanek, John

Historical Note: John Zemanek, F.A.I.A., (1921-2016) was a Houston architect and for fifty years an influential member of the faculty of the University of Houston College of Architecture. He was known for his uncompromising integrity as an architect and his refusal to follow fashions or trends. This was seen in his buildings, which reflected his strongly held modernist principles and his deep interest in Japanese architecture and culture. They often featured post-and-beam construction and natural, unfinished materials. His legacy includes three houses he designed and built for himself in Houston's Montrose neighborhood, and his influence on the countless students he taught over the years.
