University of Houston. Athletics Department | University of Houston Libraries

Name: University of Houston. Athletics Department

Historical Note:

The University of Houston’s first athletic teams existed merely as student extracurricular activities during its years as the Houston Junior College (1927 -1934), and consisted of a girl’s basketball team, an ice hockey team, and a football team.

Over the years, as enrollment and construction increased at the university, so did the desire for a great athletics program. The first year of intercollegiate sports was 1946.

Since that time the University of Houston Department of Athletics has grown tremendously, and has seen the construction of eight on-campus facilities for the purpose of supporting its student athletes.
