Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection includes Sarwar’s writings and publications, publishing correspondence, publicity materials, and journals, her planning documents, course materials and other documents related to youth and adult workshops, student publications from Sarwar’s classes, as well as documents from committee memberships, awards, ephemera and original artwork.

Materials are arranged intellectually by category, with each series corresponding to different activities. Materials are arranged chronologically within each series.

Collection Historical Note

Sehba Sarwar is a multi-disciplinary artist, writer, activist, educator and founder of Voices Breaking Boundaries (2014-015). Sarwar was raised in Karachi, Pakistan and developed an early commitment to activism and social justice through her parents. Over the past thirty years, she has generated poetry, essays, short-stories, a novel, visual art installations. Her work has been published in The New York Times Magazine, the Houston Chronicle, Callaloo and more.

Alongside her work as an artist and writer, Sarwar has taught for Writers in the Schools, held youth and adult workshops, and served on the boards of several prominent organizations such as Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, and Friends of Women’s Studies at UH. Sarwar is currently based in Southern California from where she produces writing and art, offers workshops, and continues to lead VBB.
